Back to basics AGA cookery – introductory course


Date: Back to basics – introductory AGA cookery classes are available to book every Wednesday, on a date to suit you.  The class includes four hours of personal tuition for a maximum of two guests with Lisa Osman.   We are always pleased to create a bespoke class for private individuals or a group of friends or family at your home or ours. Please contact us for details.

Time: Depending on your travel arrangements, we suggest you arrive at 11 am for coffee and the class will start shortly after arrival.  Tuition usually draws to a close by 3.15 pm following an informal light lunch.

Age: Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult

Accommodation: We have lovely guest bedrooms available – please enquire if you wish to extend your stay. We can offer special rates for AGA cookery guests. All Hallows Farmhouse is proud to be included within the list of approved AGA cookery schools.

To book: To reserve your place please contact us with some dates that may suit you and we will send you full booking details.  It is possible to pay securely online by paypal or we can send an invoice for BACS transfer. We require payment in full to secure the date for half day classes.

Gift vouchers: If you would like to purchase an AGA cookery day for a friend or loved one please let us know and we will be pleased to help you.  These are payable in full at time of booking and the voucher is valid for one year from the date of purchase.

What do I need to bring?: We supply knives, aprons and all ingredients.  You will take home a cookery folder of recipes along with additional useful information.  You may like to bring a pair of wellingtons or outdoor shoes so that you can explore the gardens.  Don’t forget to bring some containers to take some samples home with you.

A busy morning getting to grips with the principles of traditional AGA cookery.

You may be moving to your forever home complete with a pre-loved AGA or perhaps you have saved hard for a new kitchen and would love to purchase a cast-iron cooker for the first time.

Whatever your circumstances, you are keen to maximise the potential of your new AGA and would love to learn within an inspiring and non-competitive environment.

this four hour session is the perfect opportunity to find your way around the stove, includes some ‘hands on’ cookery as well as learn the fundamental rules of making the most of this valuable asset.

We will share lots of hints and tips, explain the AGA rules and why it helps to follow them, as well as give you the chance to hone some cookery skills.

How the day works: You arrive at 11 am, or you may prefer to book one of our farmhouse rooms and stay overnight. Either way the kettle is always on and fresh coffee will be ready to serve.

Prior to your visit there will be an exchange of emails, so that we are fully aware of your expectations.  As soon as you arrive, we will serve coffee or a freshly brewed pot of Dorset tea and spend ten minutes on an overview of the cookery session.

Next it is time to get our aprons on and start cooking.  Most of the preparation will already be taken care of and we will show you around our 30 amp AGA and explain how it works and the benefits of cooking with a cast-iron oven.

We will spend the whole session cooking together in the farmhouse kitchen.  All of the traditional AGA rules will be fully explained during this personal class and we will also show you some classic cookery methods.  Our philosophy is to teach skills rather than recipes, so we will also share tips on how dishes can be adjusted to take account of the seasons and your store cupboard.

What will you make during the class –

Classic Swiss roll or Genoise sponge to take home (please bring a cake tin).

Cheese scones to serve with coffee

English Muffins or a batch of morning rolls to enjoy with lunch

Seasonal light vegetarian lunch

At the end of a busy morning you will take home a file full of useful recipes, tips and information and we will send electronic copies of your recipes too.  If there are any questions that arise after your time with us, Lisa promises that you can contact her at any time for help and advice over the phone or email.

The tuition will draw to a close by 3.15 pm following an AGA cooked lunch which we will enjoy together, giving you extra time to ask any questions from the morning.

Your AGA is perfect for making the most of a busy family kitchen and for entertaining. 

This four hour introductory course will enable you to understand the rules of AGA cookery and to be able to convert all conventional recipes to AGA methods.
