WIN ‘direct trade’, micro batch chocolate in our Easter ‘giveaway’…
Chocolate has become synonymous with Easter and we believe that everyone should have the chance to taste a unique and delicious single origin bar. So, when we open the farmhouse doors to guests again in May, we shall also be gifting a bar of chocolate to everyone that comes to stay.
Until then, we are determined to spread the word and encourage everyone to learn a little more about the chocolate they eat. How to enjoy ‘bean to bar’ and single origin chocolates and also make the choice of whether they want to opt for a food that has been carefully sourced and then crafted in small batches by artisans. Or, whether they wish to spend their hard earned pounds for a product from industrialised factories that make 80% of the confectionery consumed. These ‘candy bars’ contain poor quality cacao which in turn renders families and growers into a continual circle of poverty, lack of education for their children and no investment to enable their businesses and communities to flourish.
It does however, ensure high returns for remote traders and far away investors who either have no idea of the toil and commitment it takes to produce and maintain the cacao tree, or simply don’t care. Driving prices down for the grower, results in an inferior raw product and to combat its unpalatable taste, a chocolate bar containing a high percentage of refined sugar and countless other nasty ingredients, all from a list too long to mention. This ‘treat’ will result in sugar cravings and other long term health issues for the consumer.
On a completely different scale, one of our favourite chocolate makers is Solkiki, a family business located in Dorset and headed by husband and wife team Iris and Bob. Their utterly delicious, multi award winning bars are unique in so many ways to mention in this short post, but in brief, not only is the cacao directly traded from the farmers and growers themselves, it is vegan and proudly so.
